E4 Analysis

E4 Analysis

E4 is a British TV channel which is airs for free. Their main headquarters is in London. The channel broadcasts show which are typically aimed at 16-25 year olds. Therefore, they target teenagers/young adults. This demographic tends to be very mindful, sociable and heavily use the internet. The target audience is mainly female however the content can still appeal to males, currently there is a 59%-41% split towards females. A few examples of successful reality TV series and programmes which have been broadcasted on E4 are: Made in Chelsea, Gogglebox and Celebs Go Dating.

The programmes aired on the channel specifically appeal to this target audience due to several factors. The two most common genres of shows on E4 is romance and comedy. These genres appeal to the young target audience because most people within the age range envy romantic relationships, therefore they may watch shows like ‘Celebs Go Dating’ because they envy the relationships. On the other hand, the viewers may identify with the cast as they may be in a relationship. Also, some shows consist of celebrities which attracts this target audience as they tend to be materialistic and aspire to be celebrities. Therefore, it gives them a sense of escapism by watching the celebrity’s lifestyle.

In conclusion I can use this information to influence my idea. I need to create a reality television show that will appeal to E4’s specific target audience which are aged 16-25 years old females (however here is still a great number of males who watch). To achieve this, I could use common genres that appeal to this target audience which are mainly comedy and romance. Furthermore using contestants/stars which are within the same age range will make the show appeal to the target audience.

The schedule: The E4 schedule is structured to fit the need and availability of the target audience. For example, during the day time (from 9am-5pm) typically programmes which are aimed at the female target audience will be aired. This is due to the stereotype of which females stay at home during this time of day whilst men will be working. An example of a show is ‘Young Sheldon’ – which is targeted at women.

At 9pm ‘Celebrity Gogglebox’ is aired. This programme contains strong language and is not suitable for kids, therefore it is aired within the watershed as children will most likely be in bed at this time, and the desired target audience will be watching television.
